Mapa del Valle de Mena
A map of the Valle de Mena (Burgos) for those who visit it and those who live there: the places worth seeing and everyday services, each with its photo, description and directions, in Spanish and English.
It is built on Mapping and fed by open data: names and coordinates come from OpenStreetMap and official sources, not from a hand-written list. I made it on my own initiative, as a proposal for the valley: it was not commissioned by the town council.
Features
244 places in the municipality organised in 12 layers that can be switched on and off from the legend.
9 ordered routes — the Romanesque, Villasana on foot, the towers, waterfalls and water… —: open one and the map keeps only its numbered stops.
A page with its own address for every place: photo, description, phone, directions and what is nearby.
Search by name and a full index of places filterable by layer, with links that can be sent by email.
A live layer with the cameras of the valley’s weather stations, showing the real time of each photo.
3D terrain view and a camera orbit around Villasana de Mena.
Favourites with a free account and a form for anyone to suggest a place.
Technologies used
No data typed by hand
Names and coordinates are copied from the municipality’s OpenStreetMap dump, and a script checks every place against the original and the municipal boundary before publishing.
The cameras come from the other installation
The camera layer reads the public API of Meteorología Valle de Mena. If that site is down, the map looks as usual, without cameras and without error messages.
Photos with their credit
Images come from Wikimedia Commons and each one carries its author and licence on the place’s page.
A proven foundation for projects like…
- Town councils and tourist offices that want their own map of the municipality for the website and for QR signs.
- Districts, local action groups and themed routes: heritage, trails or local produce on a single map.
- Accommodation and associations that want to show visitors what is around them.
No fixed rates: every project is quoted on its real scope.
